Global Mobility – International Relocation: What does it mean?

Understanding and Making the Most of What is on Offer

An employment opportunity in another country brings a huge number of opportunities, questions and concerns for all the family. Some companies offer a great deal of support by providing the services of a Relocation Consultant, however there are still companies that offer little or no support.

In the world of corporate and international assignments, there are many specialist terms and acronyms in use that can confuse and distract the ‘lay' person and add to the general confusion and feeling of being overwhelmed by information rather than being helped by it.

If you are moving from an English speaking country the relocation and move is made slightly easier, nevertheless there are still many complex issues that you need to consider and plan, ideally as soon as you know you will be moving and definitely before you leave and travel to the UK.

There are some critical fundamental factors which need to be considered and carefully thought through so as to make any visit, whether short or long term, uncomplicated, straightforward and compliant.

These include:

  • Immigration - Work permits and Visas - UK Border Agency

  • Understanding the culture and language - Research

  • Accommodation – upon arrival where do you plan to live

  • Education – If travelling with children and plan to stay

  • British Banks and Banking – Access to and moving your money into the UK and finances generally

  • Employment for your spouse or partner – Consider all the options

  • Taxation - Implications

  • Healthcare- Considering your healthcare options in the United Kingdom.

  • Driving in the UK – Driving licence, experience?

  • What personal belongings can you bring to Britain?

As a professional relocation property consultancy we advise clients on all aspects of moving to the UK.

Housing, Children's Education and Settling-in

Of most concern to assignees and their families are usually housing - where to live and where will the children go to school. Some companies set a budget for housing by family size and position, at each location. The budget may include utilities or sometimes they are reimbursed separately, sometimes they are not reimbursed at all. Most countries have a property related tax such as Council Tax in the UK.

Living and working in the UK can be a wonderful experience while on an overseas assignment with your company. There is plenty to see from fabulous architecture, lovely cities, museums and ancient buildings, as well as beautiful countryside.
